How do you choose the right hockey stick?

Choosing the right hockey stick is more important than many players realize. The right stick not only helps you perform better but also ensures that your technique can develop properly. At Hockeybrouwerij, we always start by determining which stick best suits you.

The correct length of your hockey stick

When you visit our store, we start by determining the correct stick length. We do this by measuring.

For junior sticks (sizes 24 to 35 inches), the guideline is that the stick should reach approximately to the navel. For senior sticks (36.5 and 37.5 inches), this rule largely does not apply. For players taller than 1.90 meters, we often recommend a 37.5-inch stick. Some technically skilled players consciously choose a longer stick, even if they are slightly shorter.

To help you get started online, we have drawn up some guidelines below.

Junior sticks up to 32 inches

For sticks up to 32 inches, we usually opt for wood, often reinforced with fiberglass. Why? Wood provides the most feel and helps young players master basic techniques.

Junior sticks from 33 to 35 inches

As players grow taller and stronger, wood is often not durable enough. Therefore, from 33 inches onwards, we usually switch to fiberglass sticks. These sticks are stronger, last longer, and still offer sufficient flexibility and control.

For juniors who do not yet need a senior stick, we often recommend a stick with a MidBow bend. This is also the most common bend for junior sticks.

Junior sticks from the U12 category

Are you already playing on a full field, but not yet ready for a 36.5-inch senior stick? Then junior sticks are also available with a percentage of carbon in addition to fiberglass.

Carbon makes a stick stiffer, giving you more hitting power. However, it is important not to choose too much carbon right away. A stick that is too stiff can hinder your technical development.

In this category, the bend of the stick also becomes more important. Usually, you can choose from:

  • MidBow – ideal for technical development and precise passes
  • LowBow / DynaBow – makes the ball "stick" to the stick more easily, which is useful for dribbling, intricate play, and passing opponents

Offensively minded players often choose a slightly lower bend. However, we do not recommend an extreme bend at a young age.

Senior sticks (36.5 inches and 37.5 inches)

Do you fall into this category? Then we usually ask four questions in the store:

  • What age category do you play in and in what team?
  • How often do you play hockey per week?
  • What position do you play?
  • Do you have a preference for a particular brand?

Based on your answers, we usually select three sticks that you can test on our hockey pitch. Of course, we are also happy to help you online.

Which bend suits your position?

Not sure which position suits you?

Then we usually recommend a MidBow.

Defender

As a defender, we generally choose a MidBow for control and precise passing.

Midfielder

Midfielders can often handle a:

  • MidBow
  • ProBow
  • LowBow / DynaBow

Forward

For true attackers, we usually recommend a:

  • LowBow
  • DynaBow

These bends help with quick actions, dribbles, and finishing on goal.

How much carbon do you need?

The right carbon percentage depends on your age, skill level, and how often you play hockey.

U12

Between 10% and 40% carbon

U14

Between 30% and 60% carbon

U16

Between 50% and 80% carbon

U18

Between 50% and 95% carbon

Women's and Men's Teams

Between 50% and 95% carbon, depending on skill level and intensity.

These are, of course, guidelines. The ideal carbon percentage varies per player and also depends on technique, strength, and personal preference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Extreme LowBow or "drag-flick stick" not included in the guideline?

An extreme LowBow is only suitable for technically highly skilled players who genuinely need this bend, for example, for drag flicks. The disadvantage of an extreme bow is that it can cause problems with your basic technique, such as high flat hits or less control in passing.

Always seek good advice before choosing an extreme bend.

What is the advantage of a high carbon percentage?

A high carbon percentage makes the stick stiffer. This results in:

  • more power
  • harder hits
  • more speed in your game

What is the disadvantage of a lot of carbon?

A very stiff stick often provides:

  • less feel
  • less control
  • less forgiveness in your technique

Why do you need more carbon at an older age?

As you get older and stronger, you benefit more from a stiffer stick. A stick with the correct carbon percentage better matches your strength and often lasts longer.

What determines the price of a hockey stick?

The price of a hockey stick is largely determined by the carbon percentage. Carbon is an expensive raw material.

Do you want to compare sticks from different brands? Then primarily look at:

  • the same carbon percentage
  • the same bend
  • a comparable price range

The difference between brands often lies in the shape of the stick. One stick may feel a bit thicker, the other a bit thinner. This is mainly a matter of personal preference.
